“Total, para cien cochinos años que vamos a vivir”
La frase es de Antonio Penedo y recurría a ella cuando alguien le advertía de sus “excesos”. Y lo pongo entre comillas, porque en sus excesos se cumplía eso de que “es más el ruido que las nueces”. Antonio trasnochaba, pero se levantaba no antes del mediodía; lo pillabas casi siempre con la copa en la mano, pero su whisky, con agua abundante, le duraba horas y horas.
Penedo, un icono de la noche lucense se ha muerto hace unos días sin llegar a cumplir esos 100 años de edad que más en broma que en serio eran su objetivo.
Le conocí por los 50 cuando él vivía más en Madrid que en Lugo y yo ya hacía mis pinitos en la radio. Le entrevisté varias veces porque en la capital de España habían apreciado sus dotes artísticas y se contaba que conocía a Sofía Lóren y que tenía un brillante futuro en el teatro y en el cine. Se decía por Lugo que le habían ofrecido viajar a Hollywood para hacer una prueba y él explicaba que su miedo al avión le malograría cualquier proyecto que obligase a volar.
A mediados de los 60, más o menos, nos unió la noche. Yo era, y soy, un noctámbulo empedernido y él también. Éramos un grupo de gente muy diversa, unos con pareja como yo o Daniel Hortas y otros todavía sin compromiso que cuando alrededor de las 2 de la madrugada cerraban las cafeterías, bares y similares, nos refugiábamos en las gasolineras de El Miño o Los Claveles, donde convivía una fauna realmente curiosa, profesionales, empresarios, camioneros, alguna chica de mala vida…
Cuando llegaba Penedo capitalizaba la atención de casi todos, porque la diversión era segura, cantaba(Barlovento, barlovento, tierra alegre y del tambó; tierra de la folia y negras finas, que llevan de fiesta, su cintura prieta, al son de la curveta y al tiquitá de la mina; sabrosa que mueve el cuerpo la barloventeña cuando camina; sabrosa que mueve el tac, tiquitiqui tac, junto a la mina), recitaba(María Manuela, ¿me escuchas?: yo de vestidos no entiendo, ¿pero te gusta de veras ese que te estas poniendo?…) y jamás tenía prisa. Era un conversador excelente y le apasionaba hablar de música, de teatro… Recuerdo allá por los 70, quizá los 80, una noche en el Miño con Amelia de la Torre y Enrique Diosdado que en aquella época eran auténticas estrellas de la escena española. A Amelia la había conocido hacía algún tiempo, naturalmente gracias a una entrevista, y a raíz de aquello, cada vez que venía a Lugo me llamaba y quedábamos para después de la función. Estuvo aquí para hacer “Madre Coraje”, “El concierto de San Ovidio”(con un José Maria Rodero sublime) y “La chica del ayer”(creo que se llamaba así la obra que protagonizaba una bellísima Rocio Durcal). Nunca había estado Amelia aquí con su esposo Enrique y vinieron para representar en el Gran Teatro la obra “El Okapi”, de la que es autora la hija de ambos, Ana Diosdado. Después de la sesión cenamos un plato combinado en el Café España y nos fuimos al cercano “Dickens” donde habíamos quedado con Penedo. Estuvimos hasta que nos echaron y luego recurrimos al Miño. A las 10 de la mañana aún estábamos allí. Casi no pronuncié palabra en toda la noche porque había que aprovecharse de aquel trío de artistas apasionados, divertidos, trasnochadores. Cuando dejé a la pareja de actores en la puerta del Méndez Núñez, recuerdo que Enrique Diosdado me dijo, “¿pero como es posible que este hombre esté aquí?, ¡menudo actor!.
La última vez que estuve con Antonio Penedo fue el miércoles de ceniza. Coincidimos, también estaba Juan Soto, en el Entierro de la Sardina en el que tantas veces él y yo habíamos participado de forma importante. Le acompañé hasta la puerta de su casa en la Ronda de la Muralla y quedamos en organizar una cena para recordar viejos tiempos. Se había retirado de la vida nocturna y no tanto por motivos de salud o de edad como porque “Paco, es que para gente como yo ya no hay sitios a donde ir, donde hablar, donde tomar una copa sin que la música te destroce los tímpanos; ya no hay sitios como el “Scotch”, el “Agena”, el “Pipers”, el “Borsalino”, ni siquiera los bailes del Circulo son lo que eran…”
El que fue el rey de la noche lucense, la estrella de muchos carnavales, un actor genial en “Antígona” el animador de cientos de fiestas, había arrojado la toalla. Ahora se ha muerto y yo he querido recordarlo aquí. Me han quedado por contar muchas historias. A lo mejor otro día.

Y al hablar de Rodero,también quiero recordar con nostalgia una serie de los sesenta que protagonizaban Elvira Quintillá,su esposa,y J.L.López Vázquez:Escuela de Maridos.
Un espectáculo para todos los públicos (y no lo digo por su calificación moral) sino porque,aun siendo muy niños,apreciábamos ya su humor frescachón y sano.
Tiempos aquellos de la tele hogareña (cuando aún existían los primos,papás y hermanos) en los que estábamos enganchados hasta a la carta de ajuste y,sin embargo,jugábamos en la calle y apurábamos el discurrir, irrecuperable, de nuestra infancia.No sé de dónde lo sacábamos,el tiempo. Tal vez es que vivíamos despacito,que es el auténtico secreto para vivir más.
Por ello,ya no me cabe duda de que Antonio superó con creces los cien años.

Ahora que mencionas a José María Rodero…Qué lástima que los más jovenes no tenga la oportunidad de conocer al actor más impresionante que haya dado la escena española.TVE podría resucitarlo,reponiendo alguna de sus inolvidables actuaciones.Todos saldríamos ganando.
Respecto a Antonio Penedo,supongo que fue más feliz siendo cabeza de ratón en su Lugo del alma,que cola de león en la Capital. En cualquier caso,lo suyo era “actuar”,y Lugo fue su gran escenario. Los lucenses le quisimos. Sea para él nuestra oración callada y nuestra ovación más estruendosa.
